Course Description

Have you been wondering what makes community land trust (CLT) homeownership different from other affordable housing models? How are CLTs structured and governed? Where did the CLT model come from? How can you best communicate about CLTs to partners and allies? Come learn the answers to these questions and more! This course offers an introduction to the nuts and bolts of the CLT model, with a focus on CLTs providing permanently affordable homeownership opportunities.

After taking this course, you will be able to identify the ownership, organizational, and operational elements that make a CLT unique; debunk common myths about the CLT model; and demonstrate a basic understanding of subsidy retention, resale formulas, ground leases, and stewardship.

Course Format & Details

This is a live online course that meets for six hours total over two days. Participants build skills through expert instruction, group discussions, and reflective activities.

Each participant who scores 80% of higher on the 10-question quiz following the course will earn a certificate of completion.

Suggested Audience

This is an introductory-level course designed for individuals interested in starting or supporting a community land trust, new staff or board members of existing CLTs, or anyone interested in revisiting the fundamentals. Participants often include new practitioners, board members, advocates, CLT partners, and funders.

Instructors

Jason Webb has over 35 years of experience in community organizing and revitalization. He was instrumental in the revitalization of a community in Roxbury, Massachusetts called Dudley Street, as highlighted in the award-winning documentaries Holding Ground and Gaining Ground and in the book Streets of Hope. As the Community and Technical Assistance Principal, Jason oversees training and technical assistance for cities, nonprofit organizations, and community groups. He assists with exploring, adopting, and implementing housing policies and programs with lasting affordability that advance racial equity and inclusion. Jason has developed essential tools that have helped hundreds of groups learn about the community land trust model, such as the Community Land Trust Start-up Hub. Jason served as Co-Chair of the staff committee for racial equity and inclusion at Grounded Solutions from 2020 to 2023.

Before coming to Grounded Solutions, Jason worked for 15 years for Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative (DSNI) and directed the community land trust Dudley Neighbors Inc. (DNI). Jason oversaw the development of several community land trust developments and created a youth development/youth jobs program called CommunityScapes.

A Massachusetts native, Jason attended Boston University School of Management. Jason currently resides in Clermont, Florida, where he and his family enjoy amusement parks. He currently serves as a local resource for groups in and around the local Orlando area to advance community engagement and decision-making.

Rachel Enwright is the Senior Training Principal at Grounded Solutions Network, where she oversees the Grounded Solutions conference, resource library, and online trainings.

Prior to joining Grounded Solutions, Rachel worked at the Minnesota Homeownership Center, where she delivered trainings for a network of 35 nonprofit housing counseling organizations and led a comprehensive update of the homebuyer education curriculum used statewide. Earlier in her career, she worked with youth in a variety of settings, including an environmental education center and a college access program.
